We are gathered here today to honor Ophelia. A young woman who has spent her final days here on Earth in suffering. She was fair, beautiful and kind. I know that many argue her right to a Christian burial but I say enough! The only two that know for sure whether or not she chose to take her life are herself and God. God knows of her suffering here on Earth, and God knows of the unjust ways she may have been treated. Her fate is in God's hands, it is only our duty to honor her here on Earth.
Ophelia, like any other human being could only take so much. We all are aware of the toll the tragic events of her life have taken on her on her final days. Ophelia's only fault was falling in love to a man that did not know how to treat her. Her final days on Earth were spent being humiliated with rude remarks by the man she loves. Making matters worse she was left alone when her father died. Perhaps she couldn't find the will to save herself in those final moments. Perhaps she cried as she slowly slipped away. I wish others had made it known that she was not alone. I wish others did not walk away when she began to lose her sanity. The human mind can be weak sometimes, but its not impossible to save.
On her final days, Ophelia searched. She searched for someone to save her. It is such a shame that no one was there to show her she's not alone. Its as if all were rooting for her demise. The worst part is that nothing that has happened to her is even her fault. The man she loved had become bitter and cold through the fault of his own circumstances yet, he lashed out on her several times. Ophelia was constantly pushed around and told what to do. Its as if she had to battle with herself in order to figure out who to please. She left this world feeling hopeless and hurt. This is something no one should ever go through. She will be missed and remembered as a sweet, beautiful, young woman that unfortunately fell victim to misguidance.

ReplyDeletePreach Carolyne! This is such a detailed observation. I love the way your tone was portrayed. It showed how you truly felt about the tragic fate of Ophelia. I agree with you all the way. Ophelia had absolutely no control over anything that was occurring. She just so happened to fall in love with a man who clearly had different feelings toward her. He killed her father and was indeed left alone without any source of support. I mean "What else was she going to do?" She fell into the typical trap of love that ultimately took her life. When witnessed how the "wrong" love can overtake someone. I really enjoyed reading your post.
ReplyDeleteIt's like we read each other's mind! I guess great minds do think alike, or you're just stalking me....... Anyway, yes Ophelia's death was definitely a tragic one and could have been prevented. Thinking about it now, she did end it with Hamlet without him knowing why. I mean, place yourself in Hamlets shoes. If a guy you "loved" calls it quits without telling you why, you too will be broken. I believe that is why Hamlet goes on to say that he never loved her. His pride got in the way but honestly, I would've reacted in a similar manner. I will slickly play it off like I never cared about the person even though I would be extremely hurt inside.
